From Grenada to Georgia

In May 2022, we flew to Grenada to take possession of our new-to-us boat. Over three weeks, while Ken worked his full-time job, we familiarized ourselves with the boat's systems, replaced the standing and running rigging, and prepared for our long journey to Brunswick, Georgia. Since this would be our first ocean passage, we hired a captain to assist us.

The sail to Puerto Rico was … sporty! The mainsail was triple-reefed due to a tear along the luff, and we faced sustained winds of 30-40 knots with 8-12 foot seas for the first three to four days. On top of all of that, we were still learning our boat with all her quirks, systems, and needs.

We checked back into the US in Puerto Rico and spent a few days waiting for a weather system to pass before setting out again, this time sailing eight days nonstop over 1,000 miles to Brunswick, Georgia. The sail to Brunswick was much more subdued, with some days requiring us to motor-sail.

The overall journey was both exhilarating and enlightening. We encountered dolphins surfing our bow for the first time. Some of the crew battled seasickness and struggled to find their sea legs. We learned to navigate 24-hour watch schedules, cook aboard a moving vessel, and manage resources like food and water. It was full of high highs and low lows, but two weeks after we departed, we arrived in Brunswick, Georgia, feeling a huge sense of accomplishment and grateful for the experience.
