Bermuda to Azores | Day 5
FaceTime with Lillie and Lolly
Whew! Day 5 is in the books. And she was the evil twin sister of day 4. Ha!
It wasn’t really that bad. But day 5 was a repeat of day 4. Higher winds and big swells that pushed the boat (and us) around a lot.
When that is the case, it is hard to do even the simplest things, like going to the bathroom. I was laughing and telling Ken that I could not even pull my pants down because I needed to keep one hand constantly on the boat so I wouldn’t get slammed around. You learn to use everything the good Lord gave you—elbows, hips, knees—to wedge and steady yourself, while also keeping your hands free for tasks.
After losing two coffees to the rolling seas, we almost lost dinner too. Our oven door latch is not working very well. So on one violent roll, the oven pitched hard, the door fell open, and the contents of our dinner flew onto the floor. Thankfully, most of it remained on the sheet tray, and Ken, sacrificially, ate the pieces that fell on the floor.
Our crewmate, Monica, was rolled from her berth when one wave shoved us over. We don’t have lee cloths (strong pieces of fabric attached to the sides of bunks or beds on a boat to keep someone from rolling out when the boat rocks in rough seas). So she moved to the settee, which allows her to wedge in and sleep without being so rudely awakened.
I managed to get some sleep after my first watch last night, but the roll was real. It should count as a core workout.
Needless to say, it was a real poop parade around here for the last 48 hours. But by my 3 am watch this morning, the winds and seas had abated. And by 8 am, Ken got our mainsail fixed! Woo hoo! So day 6 is looking up. So now I am going to enjoy a cup of coffee and a shower. It is amazing how simple things like that can brighten your day.
My highlight from yesterday was getting to talk with my son, daughter-in-law, and our precious granddaughter. So, rather than boring you with one more picture of a blue ocean with nothing else around, you get a picture of my Lillie, smiling and talking to her Lolly over Facetime.
All is well.
