Beaufort To Bermuda | Day 3
Constantly evaluating weather and route
Today has been quiet. Setting out from NC, we knew there would be a day or two of little wind and lots of motoring. Timing the departure off the East Coast and crossing the Gulf Stream around weather fronts is key, so we took the window knowing there would likely be a day mid-passage spent heading directly into lingering swell. Since we ultimately succumbed to motoring, we logged 36 hours of engine time while continuously bouncing over each wave.
It hasn’t been terrible, but it hasn’t been great either. More than the physical toll, the mental work of constantly evaluating conditions and making decisions is exhausting.
By 1:30 p.m. today, the winds picked up enough for us to once again enjoy the quiet rush of water as Remedy slipped along under sail. As Madea would say, halleluyar!!
We have spent today catching up on some rest, reading, and Facetiming with loved ones.
Winds should remain light until midnight, then build ahead of another weather front. It should be a fast sail on Thursday and overnight as we make our way toward Bermuda on Friday.
We’re aiming to sail fast enough to arrive before Friday evening, when squalls and rain may accompany the front, while also slowly enough to enter St. George’s Harbour in Bermuda Friday morning during daylight hours, instead of 3 am.
First up on the post passage agenda… ice cream!!
All is well.
